A delightful verbal duel between Ventura and Serrault. Both display a kind of classical elegance, despite the sordid details being discussed. Facial expressions and dialogue flow seamlessly. Sharp, witty, intelligent, and cynical. It results in a high-quality duel between the two men, as the interrogation room seems to grow increasingly smaller and more cramped.

Only occasionally is it swapped for outside shots. Until a vibrant Romy Schneider is introduced, whose interrogation casts the film (and itself) in a different light. To the extent that it gains significantly more weight than just the perpetrator's question, which makes the somewhat abrupt ending fall into place. Small, but damn fine policier.

Ventura and Serrault are two stars who perfectly master the art of dialogue and therein lies the strength of this film, a psychodrama that can also be considered a play.

Remarkable, then, that with such a small range the film remained captivating.

Beautiful Romy Schneider as a classy dessert of a beautiful film.

Tonight I saw two French films back-to-back. Both from the '80s. I often say, with some nostalgia, about old films that they don't make these kinds of films anymore. This film is no exception. Except for the nostalgia, that is. This is the kind of film with stilted dialogue, mostly set in a single room. A film like a play. They don't make many of those anymore, really. But I don't mind that so much. In this case, it was a police interrogation to extract a confession from a suspect. The acting is excellent, and the story is well-constructed. But otherwise, I don't really care for it this way. I don't really see the added value of film in this. I'd rather have it set in various locations and a reconstruction of the story, like Derrick used to do so beautifully.
