A depressed lot.

While the subject matter of the story could still be quite interesting, none of the characters become even remotely likable, making it difficult to empathize with any of them. And bobbing on the film doesn't really help with that either. To make matters worse, we once again end up in one of those stereotypical American addiction care activities. Booring.

De Niro does play strong, on the verge of overacting. Paul Dano, on the other hand, seems to be under dope most of the time, he comes across as dull and emotionless.

And well, it's a book adaptation. If the book is just as bad as the movie, then the question is why it was necessary to make a movie out of it. And if it's better, then Weitz has delivered quite a failure.

Boring film, uninteresting, long-winded. De Niro cannot take the film to a higher level, that also says something of course, too bad. 1 * for the effort
