Playing for Keeps

A somewhat lifeless film that feels very stale and that removes every cliché. Gerard Butler does well as a retired ex-pro football player who tries to build a bond with his son. The drama that this produces is reasonably well worked out, but it doesn't really want to live anywhere.

Biel does what she can as Butler's mother and ex, but the role is very thin and there is no chemistry with Butler. She's better as a bitter ex. What Thurman and Zeta-Jones are doing in this film is beyond me, but I hope they are happy with the salary. Such strong actresses should not stoop to these kinds of movies where they have a glorified cameo. Butler, football, Biel, Zeta-Jones, Thurman... It could have been so beautiful.

Movie is cliché and not in the right way. The story itself could have been interesting, but unfortunately a bit boring. Good actors and actresses, but even that can't really save the film. You can see the end coming from miles away and unfortunately the film doesn't look good either. Unfortunately.
