This latest version is without a doubt the best, so in that sense it is worth watching or reviewing. It is an exceptionally intense film. The beginning - however slow and heavy - immediately hits hard. As a viewer, you are quickly captivated or entangled in that great suspense, which I think only English filmmakers can create. An overwhelming atmosphere. Wonderfully convincing and superbly well-cared for. Not a single imperfection discovered. Incredibly clever. (It is almost enviable; why only the Anglo-Saxon countries?). But it is not a non-committal story; it is a melancholic tale, devoid of any spark of humor..., so in that sense it is definitely a sit.

For me nothing but praise... 4*

A solid but unremarkable adaptation of Charles Dickens' book of the same name about orphan Pip [Toby Irvine] who is raised by the loving blacksmith Joe [Jason Flemyng] and his volatile wife [Sally Hawkins]. Pip is given a chance to escape a life of poverty. First by "playing" for money for lonely eccentric Miss Havisham [Helena Bonham Carter] and Pip's peer Estella [Helena Barlow], later when he receives an allowance from an anonymous source via a lawyer [Robbie Coltrane] that allows him to mingle with people from a higher social class. A neat production and an impressive supporting cast including Ralph Fiennes, David Walliams, Ewen Bremner and Olly Alexander, but it simply cannot match David Lean's 1948 version.
