The book The Great Gatsby is an incredibly compelling story in which the outsider Nick Carraway lets us look through his eyes at the maelstrom of opulence and cavernous appearance that passes before him, centered around Jay Gatsby, a completely legends erected figure of whom no one really knows the details and who harbors a secret, hidden desire. And that while film noir-wise all kinds of shadowy conspiracies, betrayal and adultery are brewing.

The movie The Great Gatsby is... well, what exactly? It all looks nice, but nowhere does this story stick, nowhere does it stick to the ribs. The film noir in radiant technicolor I was expecting was nowhere to be seen. The storylines and the backgrounds of the characters (Carraway's middle-class descent, the writing dreams he hid for the lure of big money, Tom's ideas about whites and blacks) are ticked off, but don't show up at all. Instead, Gatsby's subtle, hidden desire is completely blown up. Here he is not a mysterious figure as in the book, but a hughgrantesque character from a bland rombow. DiCaprio doesn't get the right screenplay to make his character shine, when he was just the right actor to portray the Gatsby from the book. And the opportunity to compare the lifestyle of the 1920s, when everyone 'played' on the stock market (and we know the consequences of that), with what preceded the current crisis, is completely missed by Luhrmann. He is in love with the visual flair of the roaring twenties, the parties he depicts with champagne and swinging jazz, and love is blind. Blind to all the opportunities he missed to turn a classic of the printed word into a classic of the silver screen.

Baz Luhrmann will never be my favorite director. This is also the reason why I let this movie sit for so long. Romeo + Juliet (must reconsider) and Moulin Rouge were terrible monstrosities. Movies that make me nervous. It is unimaginable that people criticize Michael Bay, while Luhrmann is so much more kitch and bombastic.

The story is not much and the atmosphere of the 20's is mainly due to the decoration. The music isn't there yet. Now you don't have to, but here it was a bit forced. I was also hoping to see more mystery surrounding Gatsby, but it's not more than a rich man either. DiCaprio is a good actor, but he can't make it.

This story is cut out for a film noir story. Give it to another director and this could be a hit.

Luhrman confirms his status as King of the Hot Air with this visually impressive, but garrulous and hollow adaptation of this literary classic. Maguire, DiCaprio and Mulligan are ideal for their roles, but Luhrman is far more interested in showing the hedonistic 20s and the extravagant parties the illustrious Jay Gatsby [Leonardo DiCaprio] throws in the hopes that his great love Daisy [Carey Mulligan] will ever show up at his party. The characters drown in the visual violence, and Maguire's endless voiceovers confirm that Luhrman and co-screenwriter Craig Pearce didn't know how to translate this book into a movie. The two Oscars also went to Catherine Martin, who shared her Oscar for Production Design with Beverley Dunn. Well, it does look beautiful indeed.
