Pure cult.

In any case, the story of the author of the eponymous book, Trevanian, is already interesting enough to give this film by proxy a cult status - especially because the book is also followed quite closely, and everything corresponds perfectly with how I had visualized it. when I was reading it. And the lead role of Clint is pretty good too, he puts down a decent Jonathan Hemlock - and no doubt better than Paul Newman who was first in the picture for the part. A nice nihilistic counterbalance to the overly serious spy films of John le Carre and the films made from them. Or even Fleming's books and the Bond film series.

It is a pity that it is perhaps somewhat little understood that Trevanian had written his book as a spoof. Yet that has largely ended up in the film, for example in the beautiful sentences that the script is full of. Or in the strange characters. Not that many actors are needed besides Clint, further than a short scene there is really not one. With the exception of George Kennedy and Vonetta McGee.

There was also quite a bit of flak in the reviews because the climbing scenes weren't right. Yet with my reasonably trained eye I only see one really big mistake. So it's not that bad, and in the meantime they are pretty good images for a film from so long ago. And then quite a bit has changed, I don't see anyone going up the Eigernordwand in their Superperfekts anytime soon. Bit heavy.

An Eastwood middle engine that made me frown at some illogical situations. If the target is not identified, how can one know that he will climb the Eiger? Eastwood as hitman Hemlock, ensures that this adventure film does not stop, assisted by his former war buddy, played by George Kennedy, who shows his rudest side in a funny way. Only when the Eiger ascent starts does it finally get exciting with beautifully filmed climbing sequences. Technically, this will not have gone smoothly.

Well yesterday I reviewed this film again after many years and didn't like it, I didn't think the story was very special and Clint could do better. I also found the Albino character more laughable than that he came across as a real bad guy, in short a missed opportunity by Clint and that's a shame.
