Blackie Norton is the much-loved nightclub owner in San Francisco's gritty entertainment district. He contracts Mary Blake, a hungry and homeless operetta singer, to his club. Norton's friend Father Mullin doesn't like this, because he suspects that the young woman will end up in an environment where she does not belong. Hurley, the opera's owner and Norton's political rival, is eager to take over Blake's contract. But Norton has fallen in love with her. Then comes the terrible earthquake of 1906...

Pleasant film up to the famous earthquake of 1906. It seems to me that it was added as a kind of deus ex machina as an easy escape route to end the love triangle in a plausible way. Before that, it is a beautiful romantic drama with a relaxed Clark Gable in a role that suits him and with a very melodious Jeanette MacDonald. You shouldn't expect too much from her acting talent, but her beautiful, enchanting voice more than makes up for it. My appreciation for this film therefore mainly concerns MacDonald's interpretations of the arias and songs. That is enjoyment.

Very long-winded build-up to the 1906 earthquake, which also functions more as a background here. It is a musical film that relies on the voice and songs of Jeanette MacDonald, but unfortunately this is not my cup of tea. Well-known actors Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy managed to hold my attention for a bit, but boredom sets in after a while. Suddenly out of nowhere comes the earthquake that seems to solve the triangular relationship very easily. Just all too corny in design. 4/10

Morality and the connection to faith play an important role in this film that seems to aim to make the most of it
to have to convert Blackie (witness the final scene in which he suddenly starts praying)
The romance between Gable and Macdonnald is unconvincing and she herself is also the film's weak link.
Beyond the preacher played by Tracy who feels morally superior to his old friend
just because he owns a nightclub.
The earthquake is impressively portrayed, but otherwise this film is not that special.
