Blackie Norton is the much-loved nightclub owner in San Francisco's gritty entertainment district. He contracts Mary Blake, a hungry and homeless operetta singer, to his club. Norton's friend Father Mullin doesn't like this, because he suspects that the young woman will end up in an environment where she does not belong. Hurley, the opera's owner and Norton's political rival, is eager to take over Blake's contract. But Norton has fallen in love with her. Then comes the terrible earthquake of 1906...
