It all looked beautiful, sometimes even stunning, with strong framing, beautifully colored light consistently, and occasionally very fine, peaceful scenes of ordinary life. Those street scenes, simply beautiful. But unlike Hou, that other Taiwanese New Wave director, I don't think Yang is a good narrator in this film. Initially, it's far too fragmented to connect with anything, and the content is too scripted and therefore not captivating for me. And so it became a long watch. 3.0*, although that's still on the high side.

Moderate.

My fourth Yang, and it's pretty clear by now that things aren't going well. I also find it a strange name, compared to Tsai and Hou, who have a very distinct style. Yang also stands out quite starkly, someone whose films look much more average. But he was part of a group, so that's probably why he ended up in the spotlight.

This film felt a bit more stylized than his other work, which further underscores why I don't think Yang is that great. The framing may be tighter, but visually it's still very sparse and run-of-the-mill. The refinement that makes a Hou, for example, so special is nowhere to be found here. The distinct slowness of a Tsai is also absent. It's neither fish nor fowl.

The characters and their struggles don't do anything for me either, but that might also be due to the poor execution of the style. I didn't think it was his worst film; there are still a handful of scenes that make an impression (like the finale), but it didn't really hold my attention. I don't think it's a film that will stay with me for very long either.

2.0*

Quite a disappointment. Especially in terms of content, I wasn't sure where the film was going. A bit superficial, not really leading anywhere. Very stylish, though, and the cinematography was excellent. Otherwise, it's a rather leisurely, meandering film with few emotional high points. It didn't really hold my interest. In that sense, it's quite a long watch.

Fortunately, here and there something can still be seen visually.
