Astérix et Obélix: Au Service de Sa Majesté plot

Julius Caesar has landed in Britain, where a small village is standing bravely against the Roman Legions. But the situation is becoming critical and the villagers can no longer handle it. When Jolitorax (one of the villagers) goes in search of volunteers to enlist the help of his cousin Gaul Asterix, he brings a cauldron of magic potion to the British village.

Really enjoyed this Asterix comedy. The stereotypical characteristics of the British are emphasized in this funny comedy. Especially Depardieu and Fabrice Luchini - the actor who plays the failing Julius Cesar - are very funny in this movie fit for the whole movie. Le Bon is also a nice appearance. 4 stars

This movie barely held my attention. After an hour I had seen it. Nice were the nice and uncomfortable scenes between the four main characters Asterix, Obelix, Flegmatix and Hippix. Gérard Depardieu remains the perfect Obelix and Edouard Baer delivered a fine Asterix. Occasionally there was a good joke in it. However, it didn't stop there. The clichéd British, the pirates and the Vikings are gimmicks. Fun for a while, but the fun wears off quickly.

It is remarkable that RTL 5 broadcast this film (from 20:30 to 23:00) dubbed in Dutch, but it never disturbs the Asterix films. The setting is not realistic (in Gaul they spoke just as little French as Dutch) and I have always read the comics and cartoons in Dutch. The voice actors generally did their job well (including Youp van 't Hek as Obelix and especially the unknown Patrick Martens as Asterix). Only Beau van Erven Dorens as Caesar was not to be heard. Disturbing was that the dialogue was too soft compared to the sound effects. I seem to remember that Astérix et Obélix contre César (1999) suffered from the same problem.

This isn't the first Asterix movie I've seen. I've always really liked the comic books, and I didn't expect to like a movie played by real players. But that was the case. And the same goes for this movie. Not a real high flyer, but I had a great time. Like reading a comic book. I will also forget about the movie.
