During the Second Napoleonic Empire, Etienne Lantier goes to work in the coal mines in Montsou in northern France. In the dark depths he becomes acquainted with misery and alcoholism. He is committed to the rights of workers by going on strike together with colleagues. The military is tough, but he continues his fight against injustice.
