A Christmas Carol plot
Christmas Eve 1843. Scrooge's best friend and business partner Jacob Marley had just been buried. This brings Scrooge home in a melancholic mood. Seven years later, this bad mood has become the rule rather than the exception. His loyal clerk Bob Cratchit is always the target of Scrooge's cruelty and bitterness. On Christmas Eve, Scrooge sits alone in his living room. Along with the chatter of chains, the ghost of his late friend Marley appears. He comes to warn Scrooge that he will have to pay for all the harm he causes others.

In terms of story, atmosphere and acting, this version is fine, in my opinion it is one of the better ones, but it is slightly less than the one from [url=http://www.moviemeter.nl/film/6574]1984.[ /url] Patrick Stewart in particular plays the part of Scrooge strongly. Only the special effects are clearly below par. Direction 3.5*

Ah, Christmas Carol; pretty much the most famous Christmas story after the birth of Christ. Although, if you look at the amount of film adaptations, A Christmas Carol wins with ease. And this TV movie with Patrick Stewart is fine. Faithful to Dickens' book, the film closely resembles the 1951 film adaptation starring Alastair Sim. Patrick Stewart is an excellent actor, who can easily carry such a thing on his shoulders. Considering Stewart is mainly known for sympathetic roles, it takes some getting used to to see him as a grunt, but he gets away with it quite well. A tad theatrical, but hey. The ghosts are a little less impressive. The appearance of Jacob Marley was still well done - and the spirit of the future is fine too - but the other two disappoint slightly in terms of design, especially the spirit of the past. The effects also do not deserve a beauty prize everywhere. Some moments were okay considering the low budget, but such a tornado was just too clumsy for words.

Little memorable film adaptation of the famous book by Charles Dickens. This TV movie was co-produced by the American TV channel Hallmark. Hallmark's Christmas movies are a household name these days and are often sugary sweet. A Christmas Carol doesn't exactly fall into that category and is very colorless at times.
Dickens' story has been filmed dozens of times, and this version has little to add to it. It lacks the humor of The Muppet Christmas Carol or the atmosphere of the 1984 version with George C. Scott. The actors, on the other hand, are still nice with Patrick Stewart as a good Scrooge and Richard E. Grant as his employee Bob Cratchit.
Visually, however, the film is quite poor and the ending is unfortunately wound up too quickly. With this, the film ultimately fails to convey the magic of the story on the screen.
