What exactly is this film trying to say? I couldn't figure it out. The sex scenes were painful, but more so in the literal sense, as far as I'm concerned: what are you doing to yourself when you get laid on a stove? This might be a male fantasy being fulfilled, but maybe you do the same with a (soft) porn film.

If she lets herself be taken in this way, is this a story about a damaged woman? Then why is everyone so well-informed about her history, and why doesn't it seem to affect more aspects of her life? Plot-wise, that's just so strange.

Is this then a story about a man who first experienced coldness in his life and now passion? So why are he and his wife relatively physical in their interactions? That's not right. If you can't stand each other anymore, no longer feel love, you don't put a hand on each other's shoulder, leg, etc., at every opportunity.

Is this purely a story about lust? Then why choose this setting with a minister and all, and why is the meeting structured so incredibly strangely? And why, in any case, choose such a strange plot with a brother and a friend and a son and his father? What a fuss, if it's purely about lust.

So, is it a femme fatale story? Then why Juliette Binoche? Did Louis Malle want to be original in his casting? And why not a juicy crime story around it?

What an unconvincing film. A shame, considering the actors are so capable.

The script is by David Hare, whose The Hours unfortunately also failed to convince me.

A rather unedifying film about a prominent politician who, for unclear reasons, develops an obsessive relationship with his son's girlfriend. A perverse story with corresponding consequences, in which Louis Malle attempts to camouflage the shortcomings by frequently inserting largely unnecessary sex scenes. The acting isn't bad, but Miranda Richardson is the only real standout.

What an incomprehensibly bad film this is—I simply can't believe someone like Jeremy Irons would lend himself to this. Or even Binoche, perhaps even at the beginning of her career, but still, there are lines you don't cross, and those are the lines Malle pushes very, very far with this film.

First of all, it's not even remotely believable—and not in a good way, like, "There are crazier things in the papers"—no, this is simply completely false. The mere idea that Irons would fall for a gimmick like Binoche. That he would pull off such acrobatics at his advanced age that you'd think you were watching a yoga competition instead of vulgar sex—if Pamela Anderson had been cast, I would have believed it. If she'd constantly been wearing latex dresses, that is.

The only actor who can still remotely recall this film with his head held high is Richardson. The rest are probably thinking about paying off that mortgage, or the car loan. It just makes me very, very sad.

Louis Malle was already well into his decline, but even considering that, he makes a huge blunder with this film. Simply embarrassing, and beyond any semblance of self-respect.
