Where "Banker of the Resistance" also made everything revolve around one hero, this film does that too. For the sake of dramatization, dates, events and characters have been juggled in order to be able to tell a story. It is an important story that apparently was not known to the masses: the smuggling of 600 children in order not to have them deported. In Amsterdam, since 1972, one of the most beautiful bridges in the city (especially when the lighting works) has been named after Süskind.

I notice that I have now reached a saturation point with war films. Actually, I only want to see films with a different story or a different point of view. This isn't that kind of movie. There are also plenty of films about war heroes who have saved many lives. This film is well acted and the film looks good. It also all looks nice and solid. So there is nothing wrong with this movie. Furthermore, it is very nice that the story in which a lot of things happens is still logical to follow. And that's very good because I've also seen movies with stories like this that you think, where is that person from or what does this scene mean? But here it all runs very naturally. The big flaw in this film for me, however, is that there is too much happening in far too short a time. The war and the persecution of the Jews is a fierce and emotional subject. But there are so many important and emotional details in this film that the viewer doesn't have time to process them. The moment you realize what kind of scene you are in, you move on to the next important and emotional event. And because of that, you don't get the time to let the film work on you emotionally, thereby defeating its purpose. Now you look at it somewhat superficially and from a distance. And that is especially unfortunate about this film. The director could have made a better choice. Either he could have explained and deepened some aspect of the story or he could have told the whole story, like now, but then the film would have had to be much longer or maybe a miniseries of three or four hours. Now it is really all neither flesh nor fish.
