Nice film about a Nigerian boy who is given up by his parents to be raised by an English family. Based on the director's hard, self-loathing youthful life. Although the main character is well portrayed (also a great role by Damson Idris), the other characters are a bit clichéd. A few good scenes, but as a whole it doesn't work equally well everywhere.

In the 1960s, 70s and 80s, several Nigerian parents placed their children with British foster parents. The idea was that the children would go to school there in a safe environment and return to their native country when they were older. This practice was known colloquially as 'farming'. British-born Akinnuoye-Agbaje uses personal experiences of racism in the story of Nigerian Alaghi [Leke Adebayo] who is placed by his parents with foster mother Ingrid Carpenter [Kate Beckinsale, including questionable accent] whose casual racist remarks do little to contribute to a positive self-image. Alaghi quickly goes completely off the rails and only finds some kind of acceptance when he joins the gang of skinhead Levi [John Dagleish]. Shocking drama with an intense performance by Adebayo and a sublime performance by the terrifying Dagleish, but the screenplay offers little insight into the reasons for Alaghi's bizarre behaviour.

Very strong, true story film.

Especially very bizarre. I watched the whole movie with amazement.

A big plus is the real-life footage at the end with Enitan and Princess Anne.
