Special film, but also difficult. Little plot and it is painfully slow at times. What makes up for a lot are the images and the music. Many beautiful colors, futuristic designs and many overlays, while the music is very atmospheric ambient. They complement each other very well and create an ominous atmosphere.

Despite the slow pace, the characters manage to captivate. What kind of research takes place in the clinic. Who is the young woman and how did she get there? What are the mutual relationships? And what powers do the characters have. It is answered in dribs and drabs and at the end we are still left with questions, but I don't really care. I often find the process of a film more interesting than the conclusion.

Not that that conclusion doesn't matter at all and as others have pointed out, the ending is indeed disappointing. Because of the style break, but especially because of the complete anticlimax in the plot. But as I said, the vast majority of the film is interesting, even quite unique, although the slow pace requires that you have to start it late (which, to be honest, I wasn't quite). 4*.

Good.

Cosmatos is certainly an interesting director and it doesn't look like he'll ever make it to Hollywood movies. His style is very interesting, but it makes perfect sense that the general popcorn viewer will never be able to pull this off.

But I also had trouble paying attention at times. Partly because Cosmatos has a kind of weird obsession with making his film as slow as possible. Everyone also seems to be talking in slow motion and so the film tells a story of 45 minutes in 110 minutes.

Visually as expected often very impressive. And apparently on a relatively small budget. I don't really notice it in this movie. Cosmatos plays wonderfully with the colors and uses a very intriguing soundtrack. So you can enjoy it visually.

But the visual style just doesn't work for 110 minutes. It's just too long, and as a result, the attention regularly slackens. I really want to like this very much, but I really can't put my vote higher than 3.5 *. Tarkovsky had the same effect on me. Intriguing film, but the scenes go on too long and too slow.

Acting is good. Rogers and Bourne play well. There is very little dialogue and most of the dialogue that does exist is super slow. It does have a certain added value, but not 110 minutes long. Nevertheless, a true visual feast with a few brilliant moments. For the rest, I can't give it higher than 3.5*.

Mandy was a nice over-the-top experience last year, especially visually very strong but also very entertaining with a Nicolas Cage that went wild. So I was curious what Panos Cosmatos had made before. But unfortunately, I can't do much with this Beyond the Black Rainbow. To start on a positive note, it also looks fantastic here - beautiful shots, many alienating color filters and also an ominous, psychedelic atmosphere that is created by this. But it was almost impossible to get through to this, there is something of a story (see the short description), but I couldn't get much more out of it. It is mainly a plotless meandering event, was my impression, and that you occasionally get to see beautiful images is nice, but ultimately not enough to keep the attention. Maybe I'm just not sharp enough on a languid almost tropical evening and I could have had a better time on a morning with a few cups of coffee. But for the time being this didn't appeal to me.
