One of the best movies I've seen in recent years.

Gosling adopts enough elements from well-known grandmasters such as Lynch & Refn, but easily took me on a journey of discovery to a completely unique world.

I'm so glad he didn't opt for a dramatized film about a bunch of slobs who are having a hard time fighting the government to keep their home. Yay....that's what we read the newspaper for! This is all done much more inventively and subtly, unbelievable how Gosling manages to make a connection between the desolate location of the beginning and a dream world with strange, eccentric figures not far away.

In a magical way, the story here is about the beast in man who pursues his own desires, whether or not obtained by manipulating a lot. The American dream is within reach for everyone, from high society by squeezing people into a corner and for the less fortunate, by surrendering to the unknown or by losing your own identity and pride.

Debie's music and cinematography create a threatening, uncomfortable yet passionate fairytale atmosphere. Wonderful escapism. Always wonderful to descend into an adventurous and unknown world, in which people dance to their heart's content, die or otherwise do their household chores. 4.5*

Gosling seems to have been trained by Refn to make this spectacle. Lost River is certainly an artistic yet atmospheric film full of beautiful pictures of a run-down town that is about to sink and where the crisis has taken over. The story is sometimes very complicated to follow... you could almost ogle at David Lynch and the atmosphere is nice and dark. It's just a shame that the atmosphere isn't as oppressive as Lost Highway or Inland Empire... something I expected.

I think this film is a protest against the crisis in Detroit, where the place has been transformed into Lost River, a place full of outcasts, madmen, macabre figures and the poor trying to survive. So is Bones, who tries to make a profit with his copper theft so that his family's house is not taken away. That is soon thrown a spanner in the works when he comes face to face with the psychopathic Bully. One of the icons that will pass for me in the history of movie psychos. Meanwhile, Bone's mother also tries to contribute by selling herself into a surreal theater society.

As said, the atmosphere is good and many pictures are beautiful (read, those lampposts in the river) but it could have been a little more oppressive for me. That does not alter the fact that I was sucked into the beautiful world that Gosling has created here. Somehow I also had to think of Beasts of the Southren Wild in terms of subject matter.

Great protest movie. Gosling needs to make more.

4.0* so far.

After an hour I still had no idea what this was all about. Delicious.

As a director, Gosling will be inspired by Refn's working method at Drive (2011) and Only God Forgives (2013), two films in which the former played the leading role. In addition, it seems that the enigmatic actor has looked closely at Lynch (Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Mulholland Dr., Lost Highway[ /i]). It only works out positively in [i]Lost River.

I had this one ready for a while, but insisted on waiting until a late, slightly sweltering evening on the weekend. That worked out well. This is the kind of movie you want to feel and experience, without worrying too much about the meaning of certain sequences. Lost River is extremely atmospheric, at times disturbing, at other times pleasantly light and enchanting (Saoirse Ronan is so wonderful ).

Intriguing debut.
