The story takes place in the 17th century. Hanshiro is an honorable but shabby samurai who has a desire to commit seppuku at the court of the feudal lord Kageyu. In an effort to change Hanshiro's mind and save face, Kageyu tells the tragic story of a similar wish some years ago, from a young ronin named Motome. But the arrogant lord is unaware of Hanshiro's vengeance towards Motome.
