Superbly executed romantic comedy, with a very conscientious and also very charming president, a love couple that I definitely feel chemistry between, and Michael J. Fox who can make the most of his explosiveness in his excellent supporting role. Sugary sweet, but so entertaining and so well presented that I can live with it (and enjoy it). First seen twenty years ago, and besides the plot I've remembered two moments: Bening who thinks that Douglas's call is actually from a friend who wants to take her in (followed by Douglas's advice to to call the White House), and the last line of Douglas' convincing speech, "I am the President", and again those are fun scenes. And an IMDb trivia item I have to share here: In an earlier draft of the script, the President was supposed to be a "military veteran and former special ops agent," and Rob Reiner then discussed the possibility of starring Bruce Willis (dubious in itself, but it could be worse: ) and Steven Seagal...

“Politics is perception.”

A reasonable romantic presidential film with pleasant acting, lots of political intrigue and fine speeches (Sorkin's hand is clearly visible). It's all still pretty current (unfortunately sometimes) and Douglas, Benning, Sheen (now as a consultant), Fox and Paymer play their roles strongly. The interaction between the characters is entertaining and the dialogues are sometimes razor sharp. And especially Douglas also provides some humor in an otherwise light-hearted film.

A film with a nice premise: a president in love. It makes a difference that the role of that president is played by Michael Douglas, because the role is tailor-made for him. Certainly his attempts to impress Sydney (Annette Bening) occasionally make you laugh and the chemistry between the two is also good. The politics that take place behind the scenes ensures that the film does not feel entirely like a typical romantic comedy, which also makes it unique. When it comes to politics, Martin Sheen and Michael J. Fox's portrayals are strong too. The film is generally quite predictable (I saw a certain revenge from the president coming as well as the reconciliation at the end) and not always believable, but you probably know that before you start. Definitely an entertaining film that manages to distinguish itself somewhat from its many peers in terms of atmosphere.

3*
