A typical Dardenne similar to his other films both in film style and theme. Another story from the fringes of society about a derailed menacing child yearning for a better future in an idyllic model family. Cyril struggles with himself and is incredibly loyal to his father. He can't see that he would rather lose him than be rich.

Le gamin au vélo is a fairly slow film with sober images and camera work. At the same time moving and cleverly acted, especially by Thomas Doret. Drama supplemented with hope. Hope that everything would fall into place. I found the relationship with Samantha rather idealistic and naive, but it was touching. Love, understanding and security are central to the film, although the adult world does not always want to take this seriously. Sam is an exception to that.

The ending was quite abrupt. Felt like the story wasn't over yet. Was a bit on my hunger there, but I can place the approach and message. Again a beautiful film by the brothers without really having created a masterpiece. The cycling scene along the water was one of the highlights for me, it was a beautiful, hopeful scene.

Cyril [Thomas Doret] can't bear the fact that his father [Laurent Caron] has abandoned him and drives the 'educators' on the youth farm where he is now being cared for to despair with his attempts to run away and find his father. Local hairdresser Samantha [Cécile de France] is so concerned about Cyril that she decides to see him for the weekend. But traumatized Cyril puts her patience and good intentions to the test. The Dardenne brothers paint a realistic picture of the condition of a child who comes into contact with Youth Care, but does so without pointing an accusing finger. Doret is impressive in the lead role, even if it's not easy to understand Cyril's recalcitrant behavior.
