The Dark Avenger plot

Edward is an English prince who, after the battle with the French during the Hundred Years War, is appointed local ruler in France. When his beloved Lady Joan Holland is captured by rebellious Frenchmen, Edward takes on the identity of The Black Knight to free her.

Compared to "The Adventures of Robin Hood," Errol Flynn is a shadow of his former self. He looks weary, and the fact that his character, Prince Edward, explains the film's title because he's unrecognizable in his black armor seems merely a convenient excuse to have a stand-in do the heavy lifting. In a sword fight early in the film, Flynn appears stiff, heralding his physical decline in his tragic final years. The cinematography and sets look cheap, though the presence of Peter Finch and Christopher Lee is still a reason for some to watch this old-fashioned sword-and-sword film, even if it adds nothing to the genre.
