This is a very lazy remake. Apart from a few minor changes, this is an exact copy of Hitchcock's masterpiece. Consequently, everything good about this film comes directly from Hitchcock's version. So, don't expect any surprises if you already know the original. The changes that have been made are actually nowhere better than in the other version. With the exception of the fact that the missing Lady turns out not to be a real spy here. This is slightly more believable.

Does this version, then, offer a good alternative for those who haven't seen the original and don't want to see it for whatever reason? No! This film made me realize very clearly just how strong Hitchcock's direction was. The camera captures everything much more carefully than you might think at first glance. If you see this uninspiredly directed film, you will know what I mean. Also the fight scene in the cargo hold is very clumsy here. The enemy waits too clearly to attack so that the two main characters can make remarks or try out lame tricks. There are more such clumsinesses.

The actors aren't nearly as good here either. Cybill Shepherd is actually terribly bad and delivers every line clearly on autograph. Gould and Lom try to make something of it, but they just can't seem to pull it off. Lansbury simply does what she has to do. The fun the actors seemed to be having in the original is missing here, as is any form of chemistry. Only the two Brits manage to reach a bit of the level of the other version, but they do so with exactly the same jokes.

2 stars. I'd rather watch the original!

Terrible remake and haven't seen such a bad movie in ages...

After watching this rubbish, you truly realize just how well-structured the story of the original actually is, where drama, adventure, mystery, and comedy were effortlessly and perfectly balanced and played off against one another, and where every scene serves a purpose in the story, supported by an excellently crafted suspense arc.

Well, in this trash, there is no sign of that at all! Messily told, overly ordinary cinematography, and a ter-ri-bly irritating Cybill Shepherds. Why couldn't the character just stay the same? Why, for heaven's sake, a spoiled rich kid? To turn him into a nice stereotype or to showcase Cybill's talents? The other actors were far from good either...

The film hurtles along aimlessly like a runaway train, and what was supposed to pass for a mystery film becomes a half-farce with even a self-parodying slant... Hitchcock would have turned in his grave!

Ugh, I don't want to waste any more words on this 2*

An occasionally entertaining remake of Hitchcock's classic. Absolutely not as strong as the original, but certainly entertaining. However, it never really reaches greatness. Average.
