Not entirely successful.

Not a big fan of rotoscoping, but the animation is still very nice at times. Especially in combination with the camera work. The drawing style is a bit too flat unfortunately, which often results in rather empty images.

Too bad, because the use of color is quite nice and the action scenes are definitely worth seeing (although the explosions are really terribly fake).

Furthermore a rather weird story that tries to tell quite a lot in barely 60 minutes. Then it is also told backwards so that you have no idea what is happening for the first 20 minutes.

Human and robot theme is also pretty chewed out, the film doesn't do too much with it. Still it's all quite entertaining and there are a few funny scenes. Nice supporting role for Ren Osugi too.

A nice little snack that looks great visually at times, but just looks cheap the next few moments. Kitamura should just get back to live action, although a funny side road, animation is not something I see him getting much further into.

3.0*

Director Ryûhei Kitamura, who is in the animation field, is an interesting choice, but unfortunately it ends up mediocre. What makes Baton somewhat fun is that Kitamura's direction is still recognizable, even though it is now drawn figures that push the story forward. The rotating cameras are back and the action scenes are indeed drawn out (the first 10 minutes consist of non-stop chases and shootouts), but the story on the other hand is poorly thought out and too ambitiously designed. A running time of 60 minutes is simply too short to adequately fill in a concept like this, so it is not surprising that Baton makes a messy impression. After half an hour Kitamura lost me here and that is a shame, because this film was released in a period when he knew very well what entertainment should be.
