Battle of the Bulge plot

"Warner Bros.' super action show of shows!"

On December 16, 1944, Hitler decided to unleash a frenzied offensive with the main goal of retaking the port of Antwerp. All hell broke loose in the Ardennes. German Panzer troops broke through the Allied positions over a kilometer long front. Supported by chaos at the Allies and by foggy weather, which ensured that the enemy air force could play no significant role, the Germans seemed to be seriously disrupting the course of the war. But fuel is needed to run heavy tanks. And that was exactly what the Germans had a dire shortage of.

A nice movie in this genre, war movies are not the easiest in my opinion, especially if it has to come across as authentic on screen. At the time this film was made, computers will not have been used and a complete implementation thereof on the battlefield. You do see now and then that studio recordings were used, for example in the car (nicely filmed) in the first scenes. It's funny that an elderly soldier still shows fear.

His natural reflexes haven't gone wild yet, so he did it himself .

This was one of the last major battles for the Allies and the Germans who until then had tried doggedly to hold onto every meter of ground. Looking at the mentality of the iron-eating Colonel Hessler, who always wanted to keep war, it's a good thing they gave up all those conquered meters of land!

This film was nominated twice for "The Golden Globe", with Telly Savalas for 'Best Supporting Actor' and Benjamin Frankel for 'Best Original Score'.

Too bad for both actors, they both didn't get any. But it does show how well the film scored with the audience and the judges!

My rating for this film is a generous 7+!

Unwieldy, far too long and often unbelievable war film, which is nevertheless quite entertaining. It takes a while to get in and get on with it, with a pretty crappy first hour, but as soon as the tanks start rolling, things literally and figuratively kick in. The last hour in particular is quite exciting. Visually very variable; here and there certain shots look very ugly, with a very cheap-looking use of background projection, but at other times the grandiose action scenes are very spectacular.

A B-movie with a decent star cast. Why a B movie? Miniatures, fake backgrounds, totally inconsistent weather conditions, fake heroics, cheesy dialogue, unbelievable actions, not a splash of blood anywhere - not to mention the blatant historical mistakes. At times it was really reminiscent of a mixture of 50's sci-fi B movies with westerns in a war setting.

Henry Fonda and Robert Shaw were reasonable, but Telly Savales was too melodramatic for me.

Nice for those who want to see a lot of tanks in action. It was not a success for me.
