A very beautiful film by Agnès Varda, in which the protagonist Cléo has to watch two hours pass before she will receive the results of her doctor's examination at seven in the evening. An examination that will probably have a negative result, because she thinks she will die of cancer, as the cards have predicted.
Cléo herself is a young pop singer, who hopes to be discovered, but is still relatively unknown. The role is excellently played by Corinne Marchand, who is also very pleasant to watch. Marchand knows how to provide her role with a lot of zest and charm on the one hand, but on the other hand you sometimes see her doubts, because she knows that she may die soon. That contradiction makes it a rather difficult role to play, but Marchand does an excellent job. Her role is also very reminiscent of the role of Anna Karina in Godards, Vivre Sa Vie: Film and Douze Tableaux. All the more fun it is to see that in a stupid section both Godard and Karina pass by.
And so the film quietly ripples on, with occasionally very beautifully shot images and well-written dialogues. The pace is sometimes nice and slow, but it looks oh so nice and fascinating. I personally liked the last half hour, where Cléo meets the soldier. I caught myself that I was very curious about the result. Very nice camera work too, when they alternately walk, take the tram and walk back to the hospital for the results. Fun fact is also that in France the two o'clock in the afternoon between five and seven are known as the hours when lovers meet.
Highly recommended if you are crazy about French new-wave cinema. Vivre Sa Vie: Film en Douze Tableaux remains my favourite, but this Cléo de 5 à 7 comes pretty close to it.

Nice nouvelle vague. Driving through Paris in black and white with some craziness in between, that never gets boring. Also one of the nicer transitions from color to black and white that I know (the other way around is more common I think). The female protagonist is less interesting than is often the case with Godard, which is probably the reason why the impact of the drama remains quite limited. Another honorable mention of the "jump cut with no cut" on the shot of the two heads on the bus, each time nodding forward.

Now not that I saw so much of Varda, but what I saw of her were only documentaries. So now for me her first feature film. You can immediately see that Varda has many qualities with the camera. She succeeds - the beautiful Corinne Marchand - does help with this, to suck the viewer in with her excellent cinematography.
It is fascinating to follow Cléo with the message of uncertainty about her health. The uncertainty turns to panic, fear, fatalism ... and the passers-by she encounters share in her account. It produces fine cinema. Go with the flow, both Cléo and the film itself. In addition to the excellent camera work, also excellent dialogues and acting. Nice!
