The earth is inexplicably ravaged by various natural disasters, which are the result of sudden climate changes. Europe is burdened by an unbearable tropical heat, resulting in water scarcity. Through the indiscretion of a meteorological officer, Peter Stenning, the scientific editor of a major London newspaper, learns the truth of the matter: the US and the Soviet Union were simultaneously conducting nuclear tests at the South Pole. As a result, the Earth has been thrown out of orbit and is approaching dangerously close to the sun.

Nothing special. The end of the planet is always an interesting theme, but this one lingers at a rather dull level for far too long. More of a talky movie, without much depth by the way, and very static too. And just when a dash of tension and spectacle seems to be added at the end, it’s over quickly with a murky conclusion. No, not my thing; actually one of the weakest and dullest End of Times movies I have ever seen.

Good film in which the Earth has been thrown off its spell due to nuclear tests, with all the consequences that entails. Not a standard disaster movie, as the disasters are barely shown. Still, certainly not boring. The film has a good structure and the methods of journalism at the time are interesting to see. A fine (ambiguous) ending too.

So, long before Roland Emmerich terrorized cinemas with his End of the World spectacle films, we already had an End of the World story based on a climate theme.
Actually, this is quite a relatively believable scenario, apart from the fact that people remain fairly calm and civilized for a very long time under such extreme circumstances.
The plot is of course very far-fetched, but the consequences are depicted relatively credibly.
The fact that everything is proceeding quite calmly and from the perspective of a major newspaper certainly has its charm.
