"He's not a murderer, he's a man..."

Beautiful film in which the intrigue is explained well and carefully and keeps the viewer captivated until the end.

Charles Laughton is again sublime, although he is in a somewhat unusual role for his work.

Robert Siodmak made good films at the time and this "The Suspect" seems to me to be his best.

Rightly a high score, but few enthusiasts, it seems. Available in a good quality version on YouTube.

1944 was a very productive year for Robert Siodmak in which he directed four films, three of which were noirs. I think this The Suspect is a good noir thriller with a wonderful Charles Laughton and – if it may be said – an adorable Ella Raines. Ella Raines, also the leading role in Siodmak's predecessor and better known Phantom Lady.

As befits a noir, and also indicated by cinemanukerke, the line between good and evil is thin and as a viewer you wonder for whom you should express your sympathy.

The Suspect is once again well directed, low camera angles are used where necessary, as are misty and shadowy scenes. The scene in which Raines and Laughton attend a circus (first half of the film) seems taken straight from a German silent from the twenties.

Nice work.

Good film about a married man who has had enough of his nagging wife. A well-constructed story with a few excellent twists (which mainly concern the main character), and the film certainly doesn't last too long. The whole thing sometimes feels Hitchcockian, but a little less exciting. However, it was unclear to me why the film is set at the beginning of the last century. A narrow 3.5 stars.
