Not my thing.

Charles Chaplin may never please me. I don't really see the charm in it. Chaplin himself is actually the biggest problem with that: I don't like him and then of course it stops quickly.

The first part still appealed to me somewhat, perhaps because I find the setting in itself interesting. The somewhat more romantic second part, on the other hand, could be stolen from me.

Chaplin's growth as a filmmaker continues in this ambitious comedy drama in which he travels as a prospector to Klondike Mountain and befriends Big Jim McKay [Mack Swain] who can't remember where he found his gold mine and falls in love with Georgia [Georgia Hale ], who initially only uses it to make Jack [Malcolm Waite] jealous. The first visual joke – with a real bear – is brilliant, and it only gets better. Classic moments like eating the shoe, Big Jim's hallucinations, the hut balancing on a precipice, not to mention the legendary 'Dance of the Rolls', but this is a delight from start to finish. Re-released in 1942 with the intertitles replaced by Chaplin's own commentary. Both versions are available, but for continuity I prefer the later version.

I think this is Chaplin's film we remember the most: he plays the well-known hobo type, we see individuals struggling in grotesque hardship for their existence and dignity, there is romance where the girl eventually falls for the poor, unattractive slob and the film is full of Chaplin's signature jokes and slapstick. The film is good and always funny – sometimes leaning towards the bland but often hilarious – but for me it lacks the real genius of Chaplin: in that respect the film lacks the originality and overwhelming charm of The Kid and the depth of its character. n best movies.

Incidentally, I have seen the 1942 version, which has been abbreviated but above all is provided with music and spoken text (again composed and recorded by Chaplin himself, of course).
