The unemployed Franz Sommer is out of work, but together with his wife Helene he conceals it from her father. When his wife takes a job as a cigarette saleswoman to earn money, things go wrong. Franz mistakes a customer for a love rival and beats the man to death. He is convicted of manslaughter and ends up in prison. Here he begins a close relationship with his cellmate. However, his wife is concerned about how prison will change the man she once married.
