Dayereh plot

Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi's third feature focuses on the plight of women in Iran. In The Circle, Panahi portrays eight women, all of whom find themselves in extreme situations. They have just come out of prison, desperately trying to arrange an illegal abortion or trying to live as prostitutes. Even something as innocent as smoking a cigarette on the street can get you into trouble. The women's lives seem to take place in a circle, the beginning and end of which are determined by invariably suffocating living conditions.

Iran has a number of talented filmmakers. Kiarostami is perhaps the best known, but Panahi also has a great deal of potential, while someone like Farhadi has been making a name for himself, especially recently. They have one thing in common, and that is that they come from a country that is very intolerant.

On the one hand, this makes filmmaking difficult, but it does yield rewarding and interesting subjects, in which the position of women, in particular, is frequently addressed. The same is true here. I found it captivating from beginning to end, beautifully filmed, and above all, extremely realistic.

The image of the women seeking support from one another can even be described as slightly moving. If you are born a woman in Iran, you have a pretty miserable life, I cannot put it any other way. Fortunately, filmmakers like this exist, so that other people can also see what life is like there.

Once again, an interesting premise from Panahi, who attempts to shed light on the position and rights of women in Iran. The picture painted is, not entirely surprisingly, quite precarious. Panahi recounts this in a documentary-like style, lacking somewhat of a plot or coherent whole.

In contrast, there is the quality Panahi delivers with very concrete examples, each one more absurd than the last. It was the opening scene that touched me the most, when a family is disappointed when a daughter is born instead of a son. With his film, Panahi offers a glimpse into the Iranian window.

To me, it feels too episodic. It is very difficult to empathize with the characters when we are deliberately told very little, and when the entire film involves drifting from one woman to another with problems without us actually learning very much about it. Furthermore, to me, it leans too close to misery cinema with a lack of nuance. And it doesn't help that it is too vague or distant. Some of these women do make questionable choices, such as abandoning that child, without the film clearly telling us why. Or the woman who wants to have an abortion when it is already four months, something that is also punishable in Western countries, by the way.. It makes it difficult to empathize with the characters, and for that reason, the film fails for me because it does not succeed in conveying the message it wants to convey.
