Tiresome movie.

The absurdity of apartheid seen through the eyes of a psychopathic bordello.

The setting is oppressive, technically the film scores high, but the role of Carice van Houten is disturbing and at times irritating. Almost impossible to empathize with her character. Shame. *2.5

A depressive movie. The image fits with it, it has something dark and sad, and I also like the acting. The story captivated me and I like the poems. It gives the film something poetic. I had never heard of Ingrid Jonker before. Her life story touches me. 4*

In the first speech after his release, Nelson Mandela quoted the poem 'Die Kind' by the South African Ingrid Jonker. Carice van Houten takes on the role of this tormented woman who, after the death of her mother, grows up together with her sister [Candice D'Arcy] with her father Abraham [Rutger Hauer], whom she did not know until then. Abraham turns out to be a strict father, with conservative ideas against which Ingrid opposes, although this is mainly limited to a turbulent love life and poems in which she knows how to express the urge for liberation in a striking way. Van Houten is excellent, but her character comes across as quite self-centered and that makes it difficult to sympathize with her character and get emotionally involved in the events in her life.
