Le Genou de Claire plot

French diplomat Jerome is on vacation and meets Claire, the daughter of a friend. Although he is engaged, he falls in love; not on Claire, but on her knee! Because he understands that this makes him see him as a fetishist, he doesn't publicize it. He fulfills his deepest desire when he places a hand on her knee, while she thinks it is a gesture of comfort as she is going through a personal crisis.

Conversations about moral values, love, seduction, fidelity, marriage...between people with opposing views form the main part of this charming film. Just like in "Ma Nuit chez Maud" I saw a few days ago. Eric Rohmer's trademark!? Unsurprisingly, both films are part of his "6 Contes moraux".

In addition to the exchanges of thoughts, dialogues or disputes, "Le Genou de Claire" is also a visionary strong film. Very beautiful portrayal, with nice appearances, such as the stunningly well-acted young girls Béatrice Romand and Laurence de Monaghan, but above all the charismatic Jean-Claude Brialy, an example of speech skills.

The color palette is successful with, among other things, beautiful nature views and the excellent general setting partly determine that this film appealed to me more than "Maud". Actually after "L'Amour l'Après-midi", the best Rohmer.

There is a bit of trimming in Rohmer's films. Also in this film, but that couldn't spoil the fun for me. I could empathize with that beard man. I too am usually very attracted to young women. The scene in which Jerome (the beard man) put Claire's hand on Claire's knee was also the most beautiful in this film. Partly because there was no talking from that moment on. I also really liked the scene depicted on the poster.

Visually, I really liked this movie. Beautiful pictures of Lake Annecy and the French Alps. Given the hairstyle and miniskirts, you could clearly see that this film was made in the early 1970s.

By the way, this is the eighth film I've seen by this director and the first that scored higher than a 3.0* for me. Maybe I should watch more films by this director whom I had almost given up on because of the endless rambling.

3.5*

Apparently I am not the only one who has been annoyed by our Jérôme. A man who has planned a vacation or reunion in his native region and hovers around the hole of his writer girlfriend Aurora for a month. Aurora who then sees little harm in his flirtation with her and her two young teenage daughters.

Does he play the moral knight of free love here and there, he imposes himself on everyone and he is always talking about what he thinks is good or not. His fiancee-to-be is not there, so he does not have to answer to her. I thought the scene during La Bastille, July 14, was great. He was dumped there dry, after which he watched the dancers in bewilderment.

Now, an annoying character doesn't necessarily mean a bad movie. But that too was not fully completed. Lots of holiday feeling along the lake and hills of Annecy, but also a lot of drivel that took the momentum out of the film.
