"A simple man. A difficult choice."
Karl Childers, now a grown man, is released from a psychiatric hospital he has been in since the age of 12 after the murder of his mother and her boyfriend. He returns to the village where he grew up and, despite his mental handicap, finds a job at a repair shop. Karl befriends young Frank.

wow. Beautiful role of Billy Bob Thornton in a very beautiful film.
The film could have ended 5-10 minutes earlier, I would have found that a little stronger;
when he was still outside the house with that lawnmower blade that just left a little more to the viewer's imagination.
I have read a number of criticisms about Thornton above, but I think the effect of his role as Karl is very strong. Without wanting to give up too much: a deeply damaged man, who has become (institutionalized) (further) dulled over the years, but who has (developed) an inner sense of norms and values, appears to be able to adapt nicely after release, but then again can't deal with a major inner conflict, because of that early(er) damage . It is very realistic to me.
A film well worth seeing.
Very close to a must-see in my opinion.

I've seen this movie before, but I barely remembered it. Only the special accent of the main character. The man talks like a race car. A mentally retarded man who committed two murders when he was twelve has been declared "cured" and must be returned to society when he is now 50 to 60 (?). Age is not disclosed in my opinion. He befriends a boy of about twelve years old. And that's the best thing about the movie. There are very nice scenes in the movie. Especially between the man and the boy. But unfortunately there are also very weak, unbelievable and unbalanced scenes in the film. And that is very unfortunate. Those scenes could have been better too. Because the film is also quite on the long side. There are also occasional storylines that will no longer be continued. Another good thing about the film is that there is a constant tension. You feel that it will not end well in the end. And you soon know who the next victim will be. The film also makes no effort to come up with another surprising plot twist. Still, the balance at the end is still tipped in the right direction, because it is a beautiful film. But he could have been so much nicer.
