Sombre plot
Jean is a puppeteer who travels through the south of France. He regularly picks up women - prostitutes or strippers - whom he then kills. Normal human contact is alien to him: he doesn't talk to them, at most commands them, and strangles them. Along the highway he meets Claire. The attraction between them is instinctive and indefinable. A form of affection seems possible, perhaps even of love, but Jean proves unable to curb his dark urges. He doesn't kill her, but experiencing feelings for another human being doesn't bring redemption either...
