Took it out of a box of discounted DVDs a while ago and watched it tonight.

For Chans doing this is a very serious action thriller, without the usual humor and self-relativity. What you do get is a serious thriller with drama and some hard action here and there about a man who has lost everything in life and is only out for revenge and justice.

Both sides of the story are illuminated and we also see how Brosnan, as Irish deputy prime minister and also ex-IRA member of the hardline, has to bend all kinds of bends to save his position, reputation and clean limb.

Film is reasonably exciting, but can't rise above TV level and is ultimately only nice, but certainly not a high-flyer. Director Campbell was once responsible for successfully rebooting the James Bond franchise twice and did the same for Zorro, but has never made anything of substantial significance since. He will certainly not write film history with this film either.

A six or three stars.

'The Foreigner' is a neatly shot film that seems to want to combine two genres: a political thriller with Pierce Brosnan and an action movie with Jackie Chan. This results in a not always consistent whole, but Martin Campbell still managed to make it an easy-to-watch whole. Campbell is therefore a professional who has, among other things, two Bond films to his name, including one with the same Brosnan. For Chan, it is a rare role in the more serious genre. And that's no mistake because 'The Foreigner' is a great film.

Solid.

Not the most believable film, but all in all precise enough to justify a night at the movies. Jackie Chan acts better than the stiff Pierce Brosnan, yet a mediocre actor once some emotion is involved. But Chan also feels a bit out of place, especially when he gets to play Rambo. His action scenes are not really compatible with the political posturing and the twists that go with it.

All this makes for a film that is not quite in balance, although Martin Campbell does manage to make it look decent enough. In any case, he does drive a strange course as a director, from good and adventurous action films to an archipelago superhero film and then most recently back to this. It is hoped that he will once again reach the level of films such as GoldenEye and The Mask of Zorro.
