Boy plot

"Welcome to my interesting world."

It's 1984, and Michael Jackson is the king of pop. Even in Waihau Bay, New Zealand. Boy, an 11-year-old boy, lives on his grandmother's farm with his younger brother, Rocky (who thinks he has magical powers). Not long after his grandmother leaves for a week, Boy's father, Alamein, appears out of nowhere. Having made up a heroic version of his father, Boy finds out what his father really is like. He only returned to dig up a bag of money that he had hidden after a robbery.

Entertaining movie, but the least of Waititi I've seen so far. Of all his films, Boy is the least comedic and doesn't really feel tight or sharp in terms of script. The drily comic tone with a surrealistic element here and there - which Waititi is the best at - is certainly present, but it seemed as if the entire film was rippling. Boy is more of an atmosphere picture with a lot of amusing scenes than a clear story that is told. And then I personally have more with the latter, even though Waititi paints a nice picture and creates a good atmosphere. Most of the humor comes from Waititi himself as the father - unless you find it more comical when kids call each other 'egg' all the time - and especially in the beginning he does some funny scenes with his two mates (that drinking tea in the car ) was a nice one, for example. Gradually it all becomes a little less funny and there is more focus on the drama. Boy is a great movie, but I'd rather give Eagle vs Shark, Hunt for the Wilderpeople or What We Do in the Shadows.

3.5 stars.

Quirky tragicomedy about the relationship of a Maori boy, Boy, with his worthless father Alamein, who left him behind after the death of his mother and has become a petty crook. Alamein returns home with his two goofy friends, but it's not really to reunite with his son, but to retrieve a wad of money he's hidden somewhere in a meadow, though he can't remember where exactly.

What is really nice about the film is that you are sometimes taken into the child's imagination, with short animations and dreamy sequences in which Boy sees idealized versions of his father. The boy's early deceased mother casts a somewhat gloomier shadow over everything, but I certainly found that welcome. Behind the craziness is a bit of tragedy hidden without it getting too much impact.

The film takes place in the mid-1980s. References are made to Michael Jackson and ET, and the Maoris seem to live a simple, somewhat bored existence in their ramshackle coastal village. I think Waititi also wants to make it clear that dreams and imagination were a means in these difficult times to alleviate poverty and precarity. Brought fresh, looks sluggish. A film that also tells a lot more than you might suspect.

Nice film about a boy who looks up to his father who has just returned from prison. The film has a pleasant, leisurely pace. The father/son relationship is central here, but is not credibly worked out everywhere. James Rolleston is well cast in the title role, and Taika Waititi is less so as the father.
