With less than twenty titles left in the stack, the end of sifting through one's own film collection is in sight. Jin-Ro is therefore a film that I had quite a few expectations for and therefore had saved it for (approximately) last. The animations may not be the best you can find in the genre, but it is certainly not disturbing. The police units look grim, especially in the sewers. The red eyes are terrifying. Still, Jin-Ro is certainly not an action movie. It is mainly a drama with psychological elements. The book of Little Red Riding Hood plays a big role and that story is beautifully woven into Jin-Ro. Strong story this. A deservedly an anime classic as far as I'm concerned.

Great film and the English dub is a success in my opinion (I have to mention that I find Japanese dubs too often cringe-inducing, because of the barking and grunting of the men and the squeaking of the women, and so I avoid it as a rule). Nicely drawn and in a realistic style, different from typical anime. Here the people really look like the Japanese, without big eyes and with a yellower skin. You really get a 60s feeling, on the other hand, despite the old cars. A nice soundtrack here and there, but it was also used very sparingly.

I certainly didn't think the film was too slow. There is more than enough intrigue in the story. Just don't expect an action or real spy movie. On the other hand, there is enough tragedy and drama. Without gooey romance, but with a slowly blossoming affection. The Little Red Riding Hood motif seems very forced in the beginning and I'm not really fond of symbolism, but in the end it works anyway. It might be interesting to mention that not all variants of that fairy tale contain the (popular) happy ending. In his view, the film corresponds to mine that those happy fairy tales often contain a big lie. And that man is a wolf, Plato knew long before Hobbes explained this further. Yet you can clearly see that Fuse has an inner conflict. The film does enough justice to the complexity of being human.

A modern classic with influence, just like Ghost in the Shell. The Wehrmacht helmets with the ghostly red glowing viewers have clearly been an inspiration for the game Killzone.

Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade

Great animation film by Okiura. Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade starts off fantastically with the explosive scene in an underground tunnel system, and the story is laid out in a short and very effective way. Covering multiple genres and themes, Jin-Roh is a combination of a political thriller, an action movie, and a fairytale romantic drama.

The animation looks great, and especially the way the desolate city is depicted makes for an atmospheric film. Compliments also for the suits that the members of the Wolf Brigade are wearing. The political subplot is not very well developed, but fortunately Jin-Roh convinces as a romantic drama and as a violent action thriller.
