Good debut film by Derek Cianfrance, which had been on my to see list for a long time, but which I kept pushing aside in favor of other films. Unjustified, because this is far from bad.

Blue Valentine is especially very recognizable, although it is the kind of situation you never hope to end up in. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams act well, playing a couple who are at the bottom of their relationship. The atmosphere is there too. It is gray and dejected and has a certain gloom that lingers over everything for the entire playing time.

It also reminds me of the “Before” trilogy. However, Blue Valentine does not reach that level, but that is also almost impossible. However, it does provide a nicely detailed story about the problems that people can experience during love. Realistic, well acted, a constant level and a nice viewing experience.

3.5*

Yes, this hit. Had high expectations for this and they were more than fulfilled. Gosling is such a versatile actor. And Michelle Williams also shows what she has to offer. The story was secondary to the flawless, realistic elaboration and also the contrast between past and present, and how they came closer and closer together was very nicely done. Was carried away from start to finish, not least because of the human emotions, imperfections and shortcomings that were brilliantly expressed. A painfully confrontational, and at the same time, thanks to its charming style, also a wonderful film.

A romantic film that just gets a little better because of the raw edge. Gosling and Williams are pushed into a somewhat caricatured role, which with their strong acting talent they can make more of than the characters contain. The film nicely shows the contrast between the beginning of the relationship and the grind after a few years. Dean is the bon vivant who is happy with the job he has. Even if he later took on the father role, he has little ambition and mainly opts for the necessary fun and drink. Cindy then wants to make it again in life. When she breaks up with her boyfriend who sees her in a conservative role, Dean is the lifeline to escape from her domineering father and conservative boyfriend. Later on, she is also the one who takes responsibility in the family and apparently even has to deal with sexism at work.

The blue valentine - pun on a sad date and the blue room of the hotel - is therefore the step forward in the relationship, even if it doesn't seem like it. Dean and Cindy apparently differ too much from each other when the crush gives way to a relationship. But they live side by side and the only way out of that rut is the turbulent day at the hotel. The ending is strong in that. Even though it's not immediately back to normal, they're working on their relationship for the first time. It has now become clear to each other that they are different and only now can they work on it. The future will show which way it goes...
