Broadcast News plot

"It’s the story of their lives."

Successful but neurotic news channel producer Jane Craig falls in love with attractive newcomer and charmer Tom Grunick. The latter soon turns out to be the prototype of the journalist who delivers the news as if it were a big entertainment show. Despite her aversion to Tom's lack of ethics and integrity, Jane falls in love with him. Little does she know that another colleague and close friend, reporter Aaron Altman, is in love with her again. All of this unfolds against the backdrop of the bustling newsroom of a Washington station that revolves around deadlines, ratings, popularity and integrity.

This story is a bit like Cyrano de Bergerac. One man has the talent, the other the looks. They compete with each other for a seat as a newsreader and for a wife. Fortunately, they have not made caricatures of them. One is not ugly, the other is not stupid. It is more a question of experience versus spontaneous charm.

With the rise of commercial broadcasting, there was a change in the way news was reported in that period. Viewing figures became important, which could lead to sensationalism and a lack of reliability and objectivity. This contrast between the old professional ethics and the modern urge to score is well incorporated here.

Holly Hunter gives a great performance as the career woman torn between these two extremes. Joan Cusack shows her talent for side comedy.

Very strong because of the excellent dialogues and the high-quality acting, first of all by Holly Hunter as a somewhat neurotic character whose work and private life are painfully intertwined. I have always found Hurt to be a bit of a pervy guy with women in his films. But let me be clear, he also did a nice job as the charming newcomer. In addition to a backstage look at how things work in a TV newsroom, the film also focuses on the strange triangular relationship between Jane and two ambitious journalists who are very different from each other. There are also some fresh thoughts to be found about journalistic ethics (ratings vs. objectivity) and collegiality.

PS / I didn't like the alternate ending on that Criterion edition. Thank goodness they went with that other one...

Excellent film about a news producer who falls in love with a new newsreader. Wonderful characters filled by an excellent cast. The love triangle is well developed, but also the look behind the scenes at a TV newsroom is captivating and the two complement each other strongly here. Funny and some good dialogues.
