This second part of the Thin Man series is hardly inferior to its predecessor. To my pleasure, the dry humor (well, dry?) of the duo Powell - Loy plays the leading role again. Although the plot is clever and surprising towards the end, that doesn't really matter.
Asta is the center of a precious, unmissable scene early in the film. Also note the butler, played by 83-year-old (!) Tom Ricketts.
Once again it's a delight.

It's nice that the duo Powell & Loy get a lot of screen time in this 2nd part and the comic elements are perhaps even more present than in the first part.
The whodunit story didn't interest me much, just like in the first part, but it is funny that James Stewart plays exactly the opposite of what he later did in Rope. ?
However, the story could have been a little shorter in my opinion, almost 2 hours is perhaps a bit too much because the plot is quite simple and is especially fun because of the interaction between Powell and the beautiful Loy. I also noticed that it seemed a little less natural, the jokes feel a bit more scripted compared to the first part where the duo could clearly improvise a lot.
It all remains entertaining without a doubt and for the time being I haven't had enough of this fun duo.
I wonder how I will like the other parts.

This second part takes place immediately after the events in the first part and shows the couple Nora and Nick Charles (Myrna Loy and William Powell) arriving by train in their home town of San Francisco. There they almost immediately become involved in a new murder case. Different from the first part, in which the couple was first extensively introduced in a light-hearted tone. There is now also such an intro, but it seemed rather perfunctory to me. After the Thin Man is less loosely constructed and the couple's acting is less casual and less exuberant.
Nora and Nick are presented much more as realistic people. That fact makes the film less farcical than its predecessor. It's all a bit more conventional. In the film you clearly recognize the mechanisms that are so recognizable, especially in the feel-good films from Hollywood. The film tends towards good, risk-free entertainment. The original and the brutal is somewhat lost. The script seems to have been written with the idea in mind not to deviate too much from the common denominator. It's still fun. It's also a shame.
The fact that the film is nevertheless enjoyable to watch is mainly due to the successful interplay between Powell and Loy, who act a bit more formally, but fortunately, just like in the predecessor, continue to use sharp and humorous dialogues. Also nice to see James Stewart as a rising star in a role that develops somewhat unusually (in light of the sympathetic roles he later played). And so After the Thin Man is fun entertainment, but is not particularly daring, exciting or rebellious in any respect. Unfortunately, the film wears far too thick a conventional coat for that.
