Mediocre first part of the trilogy. Enough atmosphere and striking period image (great wallpaper!), but the script is not captivating and meanders in all directions. The film starts as a murder mystery but quickly gets bogged down in all kinds of political nonsense and annoying subplots. The solid cast occasionally manages to make something of it, but all in all this is a beautifully designed, rather slow nothing. Hopefully the next two parts will be better.

First part of a disappointing trilogy about police corruption in West Yorkshire. The sloppy script leaves you with an unsatisfied feeling, because the story raises more questions than it answers.

Andrew Garfield and Sean Bean star in this utterly depressing but remarkably well-made crime film. The first of three made-for-television films set around a series of murders that take place over a period of 15 years (the first murder was committed in 1969), Andrew Garfield plays Eddie Dunford, a young, ambitious journalist assigned to write an article for the Yorkshire Post about a series of disappearances of young girls. He soon discovers that neither the police nor his own colleagues have much interest in the truth, especially when the retarded Michael [Daniel Mays] is 'unmasked' as the killer. Dunford refuses to accept this explanation and his own investigation brings him into contact with John Dawson [Sean Bean], the man who is the real king of Yorkshire and is not afraid to use his power to silence those who stand in his way.

There is fine supporting work from Rebecca Hall as the mother of one of the missing girls, Eddie Marsan as Eddie's shady colleague, Sean Harris as the cruel Bob Craven and Robert Sheehan as the mysterious BJ, who plays a key role in the rest of the trilogy. Director Julian Jarrold manages to recreate the gloomy atmosphere of the early 70s in a striking way and cinematographer Rob Hardy reinforces the claustrophobic feeling in this suspenseful film.
