Mort pour la France

History lesson. In Gauke's words, an objective memorial film - of which I have to wonder at that last word whether that is a Germanism. Either way, it hits the mark. These Armenians, Hungarians, Poles, not to mention the communists from Spain and Italy, are the heroes of France. Mort pour la France, as we see in the introduction - and hardly a surprise.

Of course very shortened and romanticized. But not a lot of poetic license. And a very beautiful film, with beautiful acting and just the right music. Abkarian and Ledoyen are geniuses, what a wonderful couple. Then Stevenin as the avenger who is off the path. Also very beautifully portrayed with a lot of attention to details and beautiful use of light and colors, as I like to see.

My only regret is that Manouchian's farewell letter is not read in its entirety.

Of course always interesting such a story about World War II in occupied France (persecution of Jews and communists, resistance, collaboration, the role of the French police...) but in this "L'Armee du Crime" a bit too much of the same, without the film dragging you along.

Are the shots of the attacks good, the many characters that swirled together were difficult to tell apart correctly, which was not so easy to follow.

Moderate, I would say. 3 to 3.5.

The Manouchian Group (a mix of communists, Jews and other refugees) was a kind of foreign legion within the French resistance against the Nazis during World War II. Streets in various cities and towns in France have now been named after this group. This film pays tribute to the 23 members of the Manouchian Group who were arrested after treason in November 1943 and executed a few months later. More exciting films may have been made about the French Resistance, but this largely fact-based story deserves a respectable place in French (film) history, so that these heroes are not forgotten.
