Diplomatie plot

The night of August 24 to 25, 1944. The fate of Paris rests in the hands of General von Choltitz, governor of Paris, who, on Hitler's orders, prepares to blow up the capital. The general has never disobeyed an order. And that worries the Swedish consul Nordling when he takes the secret staircase that leads to the general's quarters in Hotel Meurice. The bridges over the Seine and the main monuments of Paris - the Louvre, Notre-Dame, the Eiffel Tower - are undermined and ready to explode. Armed only with the power of diplomacy, the consul will try to convince the general not to follow the order.

Great film. Cinematically there is little interesting to see with solid direction on almost entirely one location. But the film is also not a second too long and constantly manages to captivate, partly due to the two beautiful actors who convincingly play their roles. Psychologically sometimes quite interesting in a film that feels much heavier than the 80 minutes suggest. No idea to what extent this is true, but it is an interesting interpretation and with some background information afterwards you learn something. 3.5*.

More of a talkie. I thought it was a bit too long for that. It was nice to see this historical event filmed because I didn't know it had happened, to be honest. It would have been something if Paris had been completely destroyed. Certainly the Louvre, which is one of the most important places for art and is undoubtedly worth many billions. However, it is not the money that counts but the culture and the history of the many works. An entertaining film, but nothing more than that.

In 1951, former Nazi officer Dietrich von Choltitz published the book 'Brennt Paris?' in which he defended ignoring a direct order to ignore. This historical drama is a reconstruction of the night of 24-25 August 1944 in which General von Choltitz [Niels Arestrup] is ordered to blow up all but one bridge over the Seine and to destroy all the sights of Paris (including Notre Dame, Musée du Louvre, l'Arc de Triomphe and all the parks) and to defend the city with tooth and nail with only 2000 soldiers in order to stop the advance of the Allies. A key role is reserved for the Swedish diplomat Raoul Nordling [André Dussolier]. That the outcome is certain is a shortcoming, but the script (an adaptation of the play of the same name by Cyril Gely) shows in a plausible way how and why the loyal, law-abiding soldier von Choltitz came to his decision. Arestrup and Dussollier are excellent in the leading roles.
