The most striking thing about the film is of course the large list of stars. If you want to do something similar now you have already lost a serious budget. The Longest Day did it with 7.5 million dollars, bearing in mind that you do need some set and effects. To compare: Lawrence of Arabia from the same year had twice as much budget. Many well-known names are no more than a cameo, but in this way they give a little more 'face' to the many many soldiers who participate. And not just American for a change, but also British, French and Germans. Nice to know that several actors actually fought in the war.

The Longest Day doesn't have a side story like Saving Private Ryan, but really sticks to the Normandy invasion. Especially attention to the strategic and the surprised Germans (in combination with a sleeping Hitler). It depicts the war and it is done quite well. The film has a fast pace and everything comes into focus. It has mainly become an epic film and perhaps lacks the impact on the citizens themselves. And the influence on the war. It's D-Day, after all, and not just any day in the long war. Other than that, it's an interesting war film.

A classic that still impresses mainly because of the large-scale scenes and long takes. The German fighter plane that skims over the beach while the Allies literally run into the enemy fire remains impressive. However, the Allies' dialogues are unbelievable and cringe-inducing, feels like they're talking about themselves from a distance. I don't have that feeling with the German dialogues and they also feel much more real and authentic. The film has become very slow in 2021, but realizing that this film is 59 years old and the collection of Hollywood stars is impressive, the film remains a must for every film fan.
