Beautiful film about a woman who tries to rise from the insignificance of her existence through the game of chess.

Great camera work, well-timed build-up, tender music and Sandrine Bonnaire and Kevin Kline best in their roles.

Despite the limited action, I watched this recommendation with fascination.

Sweet little film - a kind of game with the old 'if you were born cheap', or perhaps Cinderella - it's not for nothing that Bonnaire plays a cleaning lady after all. Especially worth it because of the endearing performance of Bonnaire and a surprisingly good Kline. Bonus points for those who recognized Jennifer Beals (I didn't), and who noticed that Bonnaire is pushing back her beautiful nightgown. Some storylines that don't come to an end, which suggests that there was some heavy-handed editing, or perhaps even a second part was planned. Does that matter? hardly.

We thought it was a very good film. Subdued, well played, good storyline, beautiful images and beautiful music.
