After having a car breakdown, French journalist Sahebjam ends up in a remote Iranian village, where Zahra tells him about her niece. Soraya's husband, Ali wants to divorce her because he has fallen in love with a fourteen year old. Because Soraya refuses the divorce, Ali accuses her of adultery along with the local, corrupt mullah. There is no proof, but the population is easily convinced. The innocent Soraya is stoned. Zahra's account makes it clear that the women are without rights. Her only hope for satisfaction is that Soraya's story reaches the outside world through the journalist.

This movie did blow me away. I can still assume that this barbaric ritual and justice took place 2000 years ago. But the fact that two millennium later is still possible just makes me speechless and sad. Unbelievable how something like this can take place in modern times. This is not what your worst enemy would wish, not even an animal. The story itself is built up very patiently and the cast does a very good job. They all play their part believable. The location is also worth mentioning: a dusty remote Iranian village that is actually controlled by a few ruling, manipulating people full of selfishness and with pretend beliefs that have the population in its grip. And then when the story reaches its climax, this drama turns into a horror movie for a moment. Because this is pure horror! I thought you wouldn't see much of it, but nothing could be further from the truth. Elaborate, gory, horrifying. Drama of the purest kind ! 8.5/10
