A beautiful atmospheric film, which largely takes place in a locomotive. A beautiful location that often contributes to a beautiful atmosphere and that also happens here.

Although the structure of the story is quite simple, von Sternberg manages to keep it interesting. This is largely due to the excellent acting of Marlene Dietrich, who effortlessly conveys a wide variety of emotions to the viewer. The dialogues are also of a good level and von Sternberg portrays it all well.

Furthermore, it is all very entertaining, it is not boring for a second, but I just miss that great thing that makes a film really special or exceptionally good. Der Blaue Engel had that, for example, but it is not present here.

3.5*

Adventure romance from 1932.

Only the fighting and shooting scenes are a bit of a laugh, but the rest is still quite enjoyable today.

Von Sternberg thus creates a sultry, mysterious atmosphere in which characters of various stripes move and express their opinions. The dialogues and sayings are quite successful, although they seem to me a bit stiff, artificial and even awkward between the two main characters, just as if the era of silent film that has just ended is still a reflection. Clive Brook's act in particular is not convincing, while beautiful (she doesn't even have to show her expensively insured legs to be so), clever Marlene captivates the viewer from the start.

The beginning, say the introductory round, is rather ordinary, but afterwards the quality is increased with the intrigue with several strong scenes, in which some humor occasionally appears.

All in all a windfall, straight from the old box.

We travel on the train from Beijing to Shanghai during the Chinese Civil War. On board would be a certain Shanghai Lily, immediately good for the necessary mystery. And on board a lot of colorful figures, each with their secret background. We don't get a murder scenario like in Murder on the Orient Express, but I do like a train ride like that and a group of diverse passengers. Moreover, you really get the tension of the Chinese civil war here, even if it is presented through the eyes of Hollywood. There will probably also be some tension behind the scenes of this film. There was already a scandal of a relationship between director Josef von Sternberg and Marlene Dietrich, and there were also rumors that during Shanghai Express Dietrich and Anna May Wong were having an affair.
