This could have been a very entertaining movie, but it just isn't. Yes, the film has its nice moments and here and there even some laughs, but otherwise the film has a hard time keeping pace. Story-wise it is not very interesting and the music (especially during the first part) is not very present for a film with a title like this. The lead role is certainly not one of Eastwood's better ones and his son Kyle does not immediately turn out to be a natural talent (by the way, absurd things happen in the 'whorehouse', as The One Ring already mentioned). The idea for the film was very nice, but the execution leaves much to be desired.

Reasonable film in which a country singer takes his nephew on his way to Nashville to sing. The film is set during the Great Depression and presents a nostalgic era. A road movie in which enough happens in itself, but it never really manages to impress. It also drags on a bit too long. Not bad, but far from Clint Eastwood's best films.

Somewhere between the five parts of Dirty Harry, Clint had his country period - the Philo Beddoe movies, Bronco Billy, this one, Pink Cadillac, and maybe a few of his cop movies outside of Harry. I didn't like that at the time - no tough one-liners, no barking Colts, but a weak and human anti-hero surrounded by losers. Apparently it just takes half a lifetime to appreciate that, to learn that that's real life - and that if Dirty Harry really exists, it's before the infamous five minutes of fame, and then he's gone. just to do his shopping.

And that's what this series of films is all about, and Honkytonk Man is one of the better parts of it - perhaps the best after Bronco Billy, and perhaps the most realistic and empathetic story of the entire series. Very well done, although there is also enough that is just too crazy as far as I'm concerned. When Clint himself is behind the wheel, just to give an example.

Other than that, this film is just a two-hour viewing feast, enjoying the perfectly sketched characters in the American countryside. More real people than you will ever meet. The only point of criticism may be that Clint is not exactly convincing as a singer - in Paint Your Wagon he did a lot better, in that respect.
