La Nana plot

"She's almost part of the family."

Raquel has lived and worked as a housekeeper for the Valdes family for over twenty years and is beginning to see herself more and more like a family member. And that is just not the intention. Her growing bitterness and increasingly violent clashes with the oldest daughter of the house lead the family to believe she is overworked. To spare her, an extra help is hired, but Raquel feels passed over and looks for all kinds of ways to sabotage the new housekeepers… Even Raquel can't stand the uncomplicated charm offensive of her new colleague Lucy. But also blossoming friendship brings dangers with it.

A cleverly constructed drama about a housekeeper who has been employed by a family for years and gradually loses sight of her place within the family. It is in every respect the film by Catalina Saavedra, who plays an excellent leading role as a grumpy, egocentric, ruthless housekeeper. It seems to me that Sebastián Silva is a director to keep an eye on.

Very solid South American film that was shown on Canvas last week. The film also reminded me a bit of Cuaron's Roma (2018), also about a South American housemaid. You also see Raquel's dedication and professional seriousness in La nana. For a few decades she has been responsible for the household and raising the children of a bourgeois family. For example, she is aware of the small comings and goings within the family (e.g. the masturbating son). She is part of the family, she belongs and at the same time she doesn't. That contradiction can sometimes be very painful. For example, I found it poignant and it affected me when in a certain scene during the meal the father said that one of his sons had to close the door when Raquel walked back into the kitchen.

But despite her excellent work, Raquel is also sulky and very stubborn. She often reacts bluntly or rudely and even puts a stop to her new "competition colleagues". The film is then repetitive up to three times, but this does not bother us because there is a certain smoothness to the film. Great cast and excellent arthouse without really reaching high heights. Definitely nice to see.

Quite a nice film from South America with a critical view of maids, who are a new form of slavery in these countries. They mainly come from Peru and exploitation or defaults are not uncommon. However, this is not an issue in this film because the family means well with the main character Raquel, who knows how to give an excellent interpretation to her role. But because of her unhappy existence and constant migraines, she becomes an annoying person for the children, but especially for the other helpers whom she does not want to accept. What is striking is the good camera work that perfectly portrays Raquel's daily household tasks and her emotions. The ending actually comes much too quickly because as a viewer you expect a little more explanation about her actions and their consequences. Now she seems to be imitating someone who is helping her find her happiness again. It is also a bit strange that the family gives her a lot of opportunities given her bizarre ways of acting. 6/10
