Ugh, what an incredibly boring, incomprehensible Oscar winner this is. It is a loud, wannabe comedy that fails to captivate for a single moment. All this dressed up in 18th-century costumes and a few so-called daring scenes.

I can largely agree with the opinions above. Tom Jones is a tiresomely busy costume drama in which a lot happens, but very little of it is even remotely interesting. The set design looks decent, but the many irritating close-ups and the numerous rapid transitions between different close-ups ruin it quite nicely. It is also billed as a comedy, but although the film is very lighthearted, it is actually not funny for a single moment, and there isn't a single sharp remark to be found. It is mainly a film-long viewing of the carefree Tom Jones who is up to no good and picks up women. Perhaps it was groundbreaking in the 1960s to feature those kinds of themes in a historical costume film, and perhaps it was daring back then. In any case, that doesn't apply anymore. I'm just thinking, but for me, it is definitely one of the worst Oscar winners ever. After checking, I think 4th place isn't too bad: Around the World in 80 Days, The Sound of Music, and Out of Africa are perhaps even worse.

It is interesting that this won the Oscar for Best Picture, because the film is a product of the slightly less revolutionary British variant of the Nouvelle Vague. They were called the Angry Young Men. And the film is simultaneously quite unconventional and new for its time, as well as very British. Quite mischievous for that era, it constantly pokes fun at morality and social class.

I couldn't really connect with it. The film is very much of its time, rather overdone, not very funny, and all in all quite tedious. The best that remained were visual and stylistic gags. And it is quite a wacky choice for a Best Picture Oscar.

Three more to go.
