With a small budget, such a faux documentary is not a bad choice. At least for the cast. They won't be the best actors, but in the chair of the interviewees, none of that appears to be the case. Very naturally done. It has that advantage, the disadvantage is that it has a horror tag, while it has very little to offer in that area. In fact, it doesn't do much more than use an appearance to create a mystery drama. Something about grief processing and more. Fortunately, Anderson is sincere enough to do that without cheap scares and the like. It pleads for him.

Strong faux documentary that kneads horror and mystery together into a pretty creepy movie. That while I normally find the whole ghost thing little uplifting. However, Lake Mungo manages to avoid most of the pitfalls. Instead of the usual banging of doors, blowing sheets and twisting glasses accompanied by a cannonade of jumpscares, Anderson mainly focuses on creating an eerie, mysterious atmosphere.

The home video images are of course shot broken, but they do manage to play with the suggestion very effectively. It's not really scary, more like a subtle awkwardness. Especially the scene with the doppelgänger that appears on the images from Alice's mobile is really very unsettling. Funnily enough, reminded me of a similar scene from Inland Empire.

Not all dramatic aspects are equally well portrayed. The whole thing with that neighbor came across as very bland, I couldn't quite explain the photoshopping brother either. Still a good 3.5*.
